LANGUAGE OPPORTUNITIES WHILE COOKING WITH TODDLERS 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳 I have been sharing all week how much little Miss and I enjoy being in the kitchen together. We don’t make anything elaborate and some things aren’t even edible 😂 but the benefits are so great! 😊 After sharing in my stories and in my feed yesterday about cooking in the kitchen with my daughter and making homemade play dough, I had some great conversations about how much language development opportunities there are for these activities! 🥰 I know so many of us with toddlers are constantly curious about activities to help develop our little ones’ language and I wanted to share more of the benefits of bringing your child/children into the kitchen with you. 🤗 After speaking with speech pathologists @kimoronos and @empowerspeechtherapy, I wanted to share them with you. 👏🏻 As you can see from the info graphic, the language opportunities are endless while in the kitchen with your little one. So what do we do in the kitchen together?
🍴 bake brownies
🍴bake cornbread
🍴make play dough
🍴make cloud dough
🍴bake cookies
🍴cut vegetables and fruit with her own set of knives
🍴make eggs
🍴make oatmeal
🍴plate food ...as you can see from each of these examples, nothing we do is complicated but there is so much to learn by bringing our little ones into the kitchen with us. Valentine’s Day play dough tray 💝 If you have been following along in my stories, you saw that we are moving right along to Valentine’s Day activities! Right now, if it brings us joy then I say go for it! 💁🏻‍♀️ I shared how Little Miss and I made our own homemade play dough. I absolutely love spending time in the kitchen with her, whether it’s something edible or not! 😍 We use a lot of store bought play dough but homemade play dough not only is the absolute softest we’ve ever felt but it also turns into multiple activities for the price of one. Which, if you’re staying home with littles is a HUGE win! 😅 We love play dough trays for so many reasons and this Valentine’s version has my heart! 🥰 To make the play dough we always use a similar recipe to one that @aplayfilledlife shared on her feed the other day: 💕1 cup of flour
💕1/4 salt (we used a little less just because I ran out and it still was fine!)
💕1 cup of boiling water
💕2 tsp cream of tartar
💕1 tbsp oil
💕a few small drops of pink food dye
💕I add all of the ingredients to a bowl first and then the boiling water to combine and knead. You can also add it all to a pot over medium high heat before kneading it together. Then to complete the play dough tray, I set out:

❤️ scissors to cut the play dough
❤️Valentine’s day themed cookie cutters from @target and @joann_stores
❤️heart beads
❤️pipe cleaners

TOY ROTATION TIPS ❤️ We are well into the new year and I know like many of you, setting up a toy rotation and de-cluttering our children’s play spaces has been a goal of mine. 😓 I started noticing that Little Miss was not playing as well or at all with her toys and depending too much on myself or screens for entertainment. Anyone else?! 🙋🏻‍♀️ I knew a toy rotation would be the answer for us and I’m so grateful I did a fresh switch out of things right before I got sick and our quarantine started. 😷 Spending so much time inside, having new toys out and organized has helped us so much! 😅 But, something I want to share to help you with setting up a toy rotation is the idea of SOMETIMES toys and ALWAYS toys. 🧸 When I set out new toys I am trying to have about 12-15 SOMETIMES toys set and organized on our shelves that little Miss may not always be interested in. These are the toys she needs to be switched out because she may not always be interested in them. 🤷🏻‍♀️ For us, that includes:
🤍puzzles
🤍character figurines
🤍animals
🤍tea set
🤍 @joguines_grapat loose parts
🤍bouncy balls
🤍musical instruments Then we have her ALWAYS toys, the toys that never get switched out because they’re played with all the time. 🙌🏻 For us, that includes:
🤍 @magnatiles
🤍 our play kitchen and play food
🤍baby dolls, strollers, babydoll clothes, baby doll accessories
🤍and allll the bags
🤍hopscotch rug I have also started rotating our books. But our board games stay in the cabinet for the most part. Having this system of switching out the sometimes toys and keeping out the always toys have been really helpful for us. Do you do something similar? ERASE YOUR NAME 🖍 I know the quality of the pictures on this activity is sub par but this was such a great and simple activity that I knew I still needed to share it. 😍 With our quarantine still going on, I have been trying to get super creative with activities for Little Miss by following her lead. Her interest in the letters in her name is still holding strong so I tried to change things up today with this erase your name activity! 👌🏻 To set it up, I simply used our @kwikstixpaint Wonder Stix that we LOVE and wrote her name in capital letters on our sliding glass door. When I called out a letter, she used a cloth and some water to wipe it away. ✌🏻 If you swipe through you can hear us saying “Bye bye O!” She absolutely loved this one and it could not have been easier to set up! 🙌🏻 You can do this on windows or a mirror if you also have whiteboard markers or the same glass sticks that we do. Or use this on a chalkboard with chalk to erase the letters too. 🤗 Need a more advanced activity? Try random letters, numbers, cvc words, or sight words depending on your child’s interest and ability. WATERCOLOR SNOWFLAKES ❄️ The simplest craft but it was a major hit! I had this set out for Little Miss this morning to try and get back into a routine and it was the perfect way to ease into our day. 🙌🏻 I set out a few white doilies, our watercolor palette, and some glitter glue and let her paint away. I knew these would make the sweetest winter decorations and she is so proud of them! ❄️ This is the perfect art invitation to set up for your little ones if you want to add a little winter magic to your home. Pair it with a favorite snowflake book or just let them paint and explore like we did. 😍 After her watercolors dried, I let her go to town with some black glitter glue and that may have been her favorite part! Not to mention squeezing the glue bottle is GREAT fine motor practice. 👌🏻 We then glued our snowflakes to blue constriction paper and decorated them with more white crayon snowflakes to complete the look. 💙🤍 A little tip to help get things going: try painting with your little one! I sat down this morning with her and started painting a snowflake for her to finish and it was such a nice way for us to connect. 🤗 I hope you try this one! PENGUIN ICE RESCUE 🧊🐧 This may be hands down one of my favorite activities Little Miss Toddler and I have ever done together. Still from this time last year! 😍 Her job was to use her tools with water and salt to rescue the penguins from the frozen block. This kept us busy and playing for almost 30 minutes. I have NEVER had such an extended amount of time for an activity ever! This is the moment and lesson that taught me to FREEZE ALL THE THINGS 🙌🏻 This super simple #finemotor activity took all of 5 minutes to set up! I tossed our @safariltd penguins into a baking tray last night, filled it with water, and added one small drop of blue food coloring. 💧 When we were ready for the activity I took the pan out of the freezer, ran it under cold water, and cut around the edges to transfer it to our bin. I then set up a squirt bottle, more fine motor tools, and salt to help us rescue the penguins! 🙌🏻🥶 swipe through to watch the video of the precious independent play that happened during this rescue mission! This was at 2 1/2 years old. ❤️ I can’t wait to freeze all the things with her from now on 🤣 have you ever done an activity like this before? Adding more tools as we went was definitely helpful to not overwhelm her all at once! TODDLER ART CART 🎨 Happy New Year my friends! If you are also finding yourself trying to start the year more organized, then I’m excited to share my favorite playroom organization that is super kid friendly! 👏🏻 I set up this art cart for Little Miss about a year ago and I have to say it is now one of our most heavily used items in our playroom. It attracts kids of all ages like our friends and neighbors included and has provided little Miss with so much fun in one creative outlet. 🖍 I am trying to be mindful of the materials I set out to encourage her to use it completely independently. I’m always close by but I want this to be her free reign. Independence ✅ Our most heavily used materials are:
*plain white paper
* @kwikstixpaint sticks
*markers
*crayons
* @melissaanddougtoys stamp markers I also keep a bunch of stickers, foam shapes, construction paper, card stock, and coloring books in the cart for easy access. When I knew she was ready, I also added safe scissors and glue to the cart for her to use. ❤️ I know it can seem daunting to have all of your art supplies within (tiny) arms reach but I can tell you the benefits are so worth it! 🙋🏻‍♀️ Mom note: keep a packet of wipes nearby for easy clean up 👌🏻 Do you have an art cart already? FROZEN NEW YEARS ICE RESCUE 🎊 🎉 🧊 It has been a while since I pulled out my tried and true activity but I knew today was going to be a day I would 👏🏻 need 👏🏻 it. If you’re new here, I have said for a long time, “When in doubt, freeze it.” 🙌🏻 Seriously, freeze anything into a block of ice and your littles will be entertained for a good chunk of time. 😅 This is really as simple as it sounds but with a New Years twist! 💃🏻 I simply took a small baking pan and filled it with water. Then I poured in some fun colorful confetti and random strings of beaded necklaces that I usually hoard for cutting activities. 💁🏻‍♀️ but they were perfect for the party 🎉 spin! I added a few small drops of purple food dye to the water to give it a festive flare and then froze the baking pan in the freezer for a few hours this morning. This was at 7 am so by 1 this afternoon I knew it was ready when I needed it! 🙌🏻 Pair your frozen festive ice 🧊 with a
⭐️ bowl of salt (it helps melt the ice faster 🙋🏻‍♀️ science lesson)
⭐️a water bottle or squeeze bottle if you have it. If not scoops and spoons work just fine!
⭐️add in a little play hammer for some fun to let your little one bang the ice too to rescue the items inside. This is a perfect activity to prep for later tonight or tomorrow morning when you need a little festive minute to yourself. 😉 Not interested in the new year spin?
